Sasha and his Mom at home in Belarus
Twelve year old Sasha was born with the dreadful and painful, Brittle Bone Disease (Osteogenisis Imperfecta). He lives in the region of Belarus affected by the Chernobyl disaster. The Shrine Club of Brockville in partnership with Canadian Aid for Chernobyl have arranged with the Belarusian Ministry of Health to bring Sasha to Canada for treatment. The Canadian Ministry of Foreign Affairs also strongly supports this initiative. Much help was also given by both the Belarusian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Belarusian Embassy in Canada in the early stages. Our sponsor, funding and the medical treatment is provided by the Shrine Club of Brockville. “Hope for the Future” (a Belarussian partner) has assisted us with the final preparations. Sasha, his mom and an interpreter will arrive in Canada on January 21, 2007 for a period of six months! The Shrine Hospital in Montreal has approved this sponsor and is presently waiting his arrival. Dr. Francis Glorieux, who has just recently been awarded the Order of Canada for his contributions and development with this disease, is waiting for Sasha’s arrival in Montreal to assess his condition as well as a potential outcome of his work.

The following picture shows some of the problems created by this horrible disease. His bones are so fragile that they break very easily. The constant breaks not only are painful but have caused great deformity in his limbs. It is painful for Sasha even being moved from a bed to the wheelchair. Canadian Aid for Chernobyl arranged for him to have a wheelchair as well as a Chariot Carrier for outside. This has been the only way he can move about minimizing the pain.

Sasha has wonderful caring parents (Leana & Pyotr) and his father brings him to the special needs school everyday. They live in the small community of Galacheva, population 60, where his father works running a sawmill on the collective farm. Sasha also has a 26 year old sister, Ina, and a 6 year old niece named Dasha. His family is overwhelmed by the care attention being paid to their little boy by their friends in Canada.
